RE: Dodge Ram 2500

For many years only an I-6 was available and they proved to be great engines. For comparison look at the old Ford 302 V8 and their 300 I-6. The 6 actually was a better puller than the small 8 of virtually the same displacement. I know a man that stated specifically he purchased an I-6 in a Ford because it had better towing power than the 302 offered in the same year. Can you imagine the power that a straight 8 diesel would make? They used to make straight 8s before they made V8s and the hoods on those cars were really long.

RE: Cover a gasser's grille in the winter?

The time I spent in ND I would cover about half the radiator during the winter. My vehicle would sit for 3 or 4 days between starts and most of the time it would not start if it didn't get 1 to 2 hours on a block/tank heater. Many a time I traveled 50 to 60 miles to the worksite in a vehicle with the air so cold that we swore there was no thermostat in the engine and we would need to scrape frost off the inside of the windshield.

RE: stick

Oh and I do not believe there has been a cast iron transmission cast in a consumer pickup for probably close to 10 years now. Somebody forgot to tell that to New Venture as the NV5600 definitely rusts. Until about mid-2005 all the 6 speed trannies in the Dodge were iron cased NV5600. In mid-2005 they changed over to the aluminum cased G56. The G56 has different gearing and the location of Reverse was changed.

RE: Anybody got an '09 Ram yet?

A flattering writeup. Looks like Dodge has a winner as far as the media is concerned, we will need to see how it sells compared to the competition. Even at that sometimes people don't recognize the better vehicle.

RE: bio diesel performance ??

The price advantage is regional or at least per station. I filled up Friday with the intent of using Bio but it was 60 cents a gallon more than straight petroleum diesel at the only Bio station that I am aware of that is not miles out of my normal commute. I saved the 60 cents per and went with the straight #2.

RE: stick

On my model truck the auto has a an additional 200 lbs of tow capacity. This is close to the difference in the weight of the transmissions with the manual being the heavier with a cast iron case. I also use first or second in rush hour traffic/traffic jams. I rarely touch my brakes in these situations. I commute fourteen miles to work with speeds ranging from 25 mph to 55 mph and five stop lights on that route, there are days (very rarely) that I never touch my brakes from the time I get on the road until I am in the parking lot at work. This is not possible with an auto as I have tried it with my previous TV.

RE: stick

I personnally prefer the stick for my driving but will admit that an auto is nice at times. I believe that mileage differeances are a wash between the stick and today's autos. Where I believe there is the greatest difference is that with a stick you can save your service brakes by using downshifting much better than an auto (exhaust brake helps even more). At all times when applying your brakes and while stopped you are pulling on your brakes with an auto unless you put it in neutral. I drive a vehicle at work that has a four speed auto and at 25 mph it doesn't slow down (engine brake) unless I put it in neutral or use the brakes.

RE: Marvel Mystery oil for ULSD

The description looks similar to that on the Power Service bottle. As long as it is not a solvent it shouldn't hurt if you want to try it.

RE: Dodge Cummins Problem

I put a Walbro on mine BEFORE I had a problem. Once it goes out you may cause additional problems with the injector pump or injectors. These can be very expensive if out of warranty.

RE: 2005 Cummins Injector

I am not sure but the injectors could be covered under the powertrain warranty that runs to 100,000 miles. I would look into what is covered in the powertrain warranty. If it is not covered under warranty then I would consider an independent diesel shop. A local diesel performance shop sells new Bosch CRD injectors for about $400 each and you can get a set of six 50 hp injectors for about $3000 plus installation and your cores. If you just change out the nozzles the 50 hp set is only $850 plus nozzle cores and installation.

RE: I want a new truck.....

How about some body work and a paint job? That would be cheaper than a new(er) truck and you would be hard pressed to find one that got the same mileage you are currently getting.

RE: Dodge 6.7 Tranny - is this normal?

I believe 5th and 6th are both overdrive gears, so dropping into direct in 4th gear wouldn't seem out of place to me. But then again I drive a manual where 6th is OD and 5th is direct.

RE: I'm so Excited!!!!

Congrats. As stated, it is barely broken in. My 04.5 is less than 1500 miles short of 70,000. While I have a little more power yours will get better mileage. You will really enjoy towing with it.

RE: "Eco-Terrorist" Caught on Video Keying Hummer H2

Here in this area we had an eco-terrorist person or group burn 4 or 5 new houses. They were almost totally finished and in a private setting so they could do their destruction without being seen. The biggest irony is that they had been built using all the latest environmentally friendly technology. This is at least the second time they have done this. As stated they have no clue to the damage they are causing in "protest". The toxic smoke from the fires really helps fix the environment and make it better. NOT!

RE: egt guage install

Absolutely. What kind of temps do you see? Curious how hot you let it get before down-shifting and backing out of the throttle. When I see mine start climbing over 1200* I start easing up on the throttle. I have read many accounts that these engines are designed to withstand temps of 1350* all day long. The 1200* is my personal limit as I don't believe in pushing anything to its max if it doesn't serve a very useful purpose. Yes, my truck is stock but I have seen my EGTs hit 1400* quickly when towing up a 6*+ grade. High ambient temps, high profile 5er, and long, steep grades can push the EGTs high very quickly. Even backing out of the throttle I generally at least maintain my speed if not continue to increase it.

RE: What Truck to Buy?

My 5er has a GVWR of 9740, my TV rear axle is rated for some 6000, my tires are good to about 6400. Loaded for two to three weeks my TV front axle weighs in at 4920 lbs, rear axle at 5740 lbs. I also have some 400+ lbs hanging off the rear bumper of my 5er in the form of a 5500 kw generator and rack, needless to say this takes some pin weight off the truck. No, I don't have a bedroom slide. My 5er axles weigh in at some 8280 lbs, these weights are from state DOT scales when loaded. These weights are without spouse, but needing about 5 gal of fuel to fill the tank full and not having any gas for the generator or spare fuel. Others have thier weights, I have mine. Going with my limited experience if I were to go any heavier I would want a DRW and that is one more reason I didn't go with a larger 5er.

RE: What Truck to Buy?

X2. You chose the brand but for those weights a DRW is necessary.

RE: Dodge 05 exhaust brake

I second the PacBrake PRXB. I have had mine for almost 15,000 miles and towed over the same passes with and without. While with the 6 speed it was never white knuckle time there were some grades I used the brakes on what I considered heavy. With the PacBrake my brake usage is greatly reduced. An E-Brake is the best add on you can make to your truck in my opinion. I selected the PacBrake PRXB over the Jacobs due to the air compressor on the PacBrake. It runs off 12 volt power and comes in handy for topping off tires and anything else you need air pressure for. I didn't go with the Jacobs because of the vacuum pump. They do fail and are expensive to replace and the longer belt cost more too. Just my feelings and the reason I went with the PacBrake along with the improved lower RPM braking effect.

Additionally interstate grades are different than secondary road grades.
